Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile.
- Billy Sunday
The challenges arrayed against perceptively perceiving spiritual truth have never been greater. Prophetic Christians are serious Bible students and intercessors, believers who seek God in faith confident that He's said what He means and means what He's said. They're persuaded God is "the same yesterday, today and forever." Possessed of deep and abiding repentance, they labor for revival in the hope and fear of God.
Understanding both the love and terror of the Lord they endeavor to "persuade men" to choose eternal life rather than death. Knowing they too are sinners, they treat others as they would be treated: firm, fair, factual and friendly. They compel the lost, including apathetic and disobedient Christians within Churchianity, to come into the Kingdom by first speaking the truth in love. Should compassion fail, they spend themselves and their lives trying to pull lost humanity from "the fire."
The vast and incomprehensible price of Christ's incarnation and atonement is God going far beyond the extra mile, or even light-year. So much so, as Jesus literally sweat blood in Gethsemane, Scripture suggests there may have been another lest costly way for Jesus to fulfill His mission:
- “He took Peter, James, and John with him and began to be filled with horror and deepest distress. And he said to them, “My soul is crushed by sorrow to the point of death; stay here and watch with me.” He went on a little farther and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the awful hour awaiting him might never come. Father, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take away this cup from me. Yet I want your will, not mine.” Mark 14:33-36 Living Bible - Emphasis QC’s
- “Then Jesus said to him, Put your sword back into its place, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you suppose that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will immediately provide Me with more than twelve legions [more than 80,000] of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must come about this way?” Matthew 26: 52-54 Amplified Bible Classic Edition
- “First off, you need to know that in the last days, mockers are going to have a heyday. Reducing everything to the level of their puny feelings, they’ll mock, “So what’s happened to the promise of his Coming? Our ancestors are dead and buried, and everything’s going on just as it has from the first day of creation. Nothing’s changed.” They conveniently forget that long ago all the galaxies and this very planet were brought into existence out of watery chaos by God’s word. Then God’s word brought the chaos back in a flood that destroyed the world. The current galaxies and earth are fuel for the final fire. God is poised, ready to speak his word again, ready to give the signal for the judgment and destruction of the desecrating skeptics. Don’t overlook the obvious here, friends. With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day. God isn’t late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End because he doesn’t want anyone lost. He’s giving everyone space and time to change.” 2 Peter 3:1-9 The Message
Regrettably, those with eyes to see the true degree of spiritual devastation artfully hidden in these the best of times are few and far between. Given today’s craving for Me-ism's positive messages, even within Churchianity, such men and women rarely hold leadership positions. At least not for very long. So the question remains, having foreseen this eventuality, does Omnity have a plan? The answer is Yes. But as Randy Stonehill and Phil Keagy sang in Save The Children, “If it isn’t now then tell me when. If it’s you then tell me who…”
As the old adage goes, “If you’ve got the vision, you’ve got the job.”
If even a portion of the obvious claims easily made against modern Christianity are genuine, it raises the question, How then shall we live? The simple answer is honestly. We should readily admit our desperate need of God. We should seriously consider to what degree our doctrine, and more importantly lifestyles, may need adjusting to line up with the clear and concise teaching of Scripture. We should endeavor to more fully repent, shedding ourselves of besetting sins and even doubtful habits. We should daily “spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”
Such a subset of staunch modern believers might be called Prophetic Christians. For our purpose, the use of the word Prophetic has less to do with Biblical prophecy per se, than with more fully appreciating Scriptures context and content.
Scripturally Savvy, such men and women appreciate the context of Scripture is vital to understanding its content. As well as accurately discerning and appropriately responding to the challenging times and seasons, and new sociopolitical era in which we life.
While no longer in vogue, Scripture's context is most certainly one of warfare theology. Like the whodunnit story of Job, considered by many to be the oldest Book of the Bible and perhaps its key codex, conflict between God the "Lord of Hosts" (angel armies) and Satan the "prince and power of the air" (god of this world), provides the backdrop to Job's story. And much, if not all, the entire Old and New Testaments. For this and a plethora of reasons, the content of Scripture can only be fully understood by embracing the Bible's overarching context. This crucial concern is developed more fully in GB articles such as the Evil One and demonic Resistance, as well as Eternity…The Wager (see excerpts Brief History of Eternity and Satan's Accusation). For an excellent example of previous generation's handling of this topic see the Protestant Reformer Martin Luther's hymnal lyrics of "A Might Fortress Is Our God."
The Bible explains that both personally, and as a species, mankind faces the deadly foe of sin on three fronts. Sin within, resulting from individual and inherited fallen natures. Sin above, in the form of devilish and demonic temptation and deception. And Sin about, the collective and cumulative effect of sin within and above. In regards to sin from above, the New Testament is quite adamant:
- "And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels." Ephesians 6:10-12 MSG
- "Daring, self-willed, they do not tremble when they revile angelic majesties, whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord. But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed." 2 Peter 2:10-12 NASB
- "Yet Michael, one of the mightiest of the angels, when he was arguing with Satan about Moses’ body, did not dare to accuse even Satan, or jeer at him, but simply said, “The Lord rebuke you.” But these men mock and curse at anything they do not understand, and like animals, they do whatever they feel like, thereby ruining their souls." Jude 1:9-10 TLB
Arch Deceiver
As with all Scriptural truth, spiritual discernment is required if we hope to correctly interpret and live out Biblical mandates and principles:
- "The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God planned all along. Who ever knows what you’re thinking and planning except you yourself? The same with God—except that he not only knows what he’s thinking, but he lets us in on it." 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 MSG
- "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12 NIV
As the original and supreme master manipulator, the Devil's impressive resume includes inciting ancient and advanced, holy and glorious angels to rebel within Heaven itself. Not to mention his firm track record of deceiving God's anointed. At the root of modern Christianity's greatest failures is the presumption that we are above archaic notions of devilish resistance and deception. A commonly held conviction rendered all the more ridiculous given Christianity's hundreds of sects, various Christ and versions of the Gospel. A false assumption infiltrating a linty of crucial doctrines ranging from God's unconditional acceptance to sanctification, appropriate worship to spiritual gifts, eschatology to salvation itself.
Such a mindset has proven disastrous for God's people down through the ages. The original sin of spiritual pride and entitlement greatly affected the lives and legacies of even such notables as Samson, David and Solomon. All mightily anointed men extraordinarily empowered. While Samson become a byword for foolishness, David for faithfulness, and Solomon for wisdom, they and their sacred trusts were all but unseated by Satan.
Understanding Earth is a besieged planet, Prophetic Christians invest their time, talent and treasure recruiting, training and deploying Biblically astute Kingdom soldiers. They invest their lives wresting humanity from the grip of Heaven's angelic rebellion. An insurrection that, having marred the history of eternity, has and continues to reshape our own. Through Bible study and strategic prayer, radical discipleship and disciplined sacrifice, they don the full the armor of God. They understand we "wrestle not with flesh and blood" when struggling to rescue others from Satan's wisdom and demonic resistance, who, again, as "the god of this world" holds mankind "captive to do his will."
- "So, my son, throw yourself into this work for Christ. Pass on what you heard from me—the whole congregation saying Amen!—to reliable leaders who are competent to teach others. When the going gets rough, take it on the chin with the rest of us, the way Jesus did. A soldier on duty doesn’t get caught up in making deals at the marketplace. He concentrates on carrying out orders. An athlete who refuses to play by the rules will never get anywhere. It’s the diligent farmer who gets the produce. Think it over. God will make it all plain." 2 Timothy 2:1-7 MSG
- “And have mercy on some, who are doubting; save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy but with fear, loathing even the clothing spotted and polluted by their shameless immoral freedom.” Jude 22-23 Amplified Bible
The honest and diligent study of Scripture produces in such persons a deep and reverent understanding of some, if not all, of the Bible’s most important and emphasized tenants. Attempting to comply with and share overlooked principles, such men and women often discover little or no interest among their contemporaries. Should they choose the lonely work of following Christ along the road less traveled, they embark on a lifetime trek to draw near to God. With one hand they endeavor to take hold of Omnity, and with other their less astute Christian brothers and sisters. Such a hopeful yet arduous journey must yield many blessings and trials, insights and misunderstandings.
In his insightful book, “Is God A Moral Monster?” Paul Copan notes a analogy between the spiritual/social, mental/emotional burdens Christians may be called to bear with the epic tale of the Lord Of The Rings:
- "The Lord of the Rings describes the harrowing journey Frodo Baggins must take to Mount Doom, accompanied by his faithful Hobbit friend Samwise Gamgee. Into Doom’s fires Frodo must throw the odious ring that has brought trouble not only to its wearers but to all of Middle Earth. This harsh, even detestable task fell to Frodo. It was perilous and emotionally exhausting. To fulfill this mission was in many ways psychologically damaging for him, though character-shaping in others. He loathed the burden of carrying the ring, which seemed to tear him apart inside. Yet Gandalf the Wise reminded him, ‘We cannot choose the time we live in. We can only choose what we do with the time we are given.’"
- “An individual, quite completely free from tension, anxiety, and conflict may be only a well-adjusted sinner who is dangerously maladjusted to God; and it is infinitely better to be a neurotic saint than a healthy-minded sinner. . . . Healthy-mindedness may be a spiritual hazard that keeps an individual from turning to God precisely because he has no acute sense of God. . . . Tension, conflict, and anxiety, even to the point of mental illness, may be a cross voluntarily carried in God’s service.”
Learning to recognize and confront worldly vs. heavenly wisdom may be the most challenging and necessary task set before modern Christianity. One requiring a kind of Scriptural archeology and Biblical forensics that carefully seeks to reveal a fuller appreciation for both the context and content of the Word of God. This includes appreciating that in certain respects, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” Unsurprisingly, time appears to be quantum in nature. For instance, our daily experience, as well as science and Scripture, reveal time as linear rather than circular. Even so, in a variety of ways, history repeats itself. Sometimes, like a lazy hawk rising in ever increasing circles. This can also hold true for prophecy. Consider the following well known passage from Joel:
- “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.” Joel 2:28-31 New International Version
- “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?” Acts 2:1-8 New International Version
While there would be signs and wonders aplenty flowing from the power bestowed on Pentecost, they would not be of the heavenly variety. No “blood and fire” or "billows of smoke.” No darkening of the sun or blood red moon. The appointed time for such “wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below” had not then arrived. Though given the similarity to likely byproducts of a nuclear winter, Such signs could happen any day.
What caused Peter to overshoot the Old Testament reference? Perhaps he was caught up in the moment. Perhaps he was evangelastically priming his audience. Or perhaps the Spirit of prophecy was serving notice that there yet remained a final future fulfillment. The latter explanation is supported in a variety of ways, including the first two words of the original prophecy from Joel 2:28: “And after.” After what? How about Joel 2:1-27? A passage that bares striking similarities to the Book of Revelation. Including Joel 2:3-11’s fearful resemblance to John’s Revelation 9:13-16. A terrible prediction of a 200 million man calvary that will kill 1/3 of humanity:
- “There’s never been anything like it and never will be again. Wildfire burns everything before this army and fire licks up everything in its wake. Before it arrives, the country is like the Garden of Eden. When it leaves, it is Death Valley. Nothing escapes unscathed. The locust army seems all horses—galloping horses, an army of horses. It sounds like thunder leaping on mountain ridges, Or like the roar of wildfire through grass and brush, Or like an invincible army shouting for blood, ready to fight, straining at the bit. At the sight of this army, the people panic, faces white with terror. The invaders charge. They climb barricades. Nothing stops them. Each soldier does what he’s told, so disciplined, so determined. They don’t get in each other’s way. Each one knows his job and does it. Undaunted and fearless, unswerving, unstoppable. They storm the city, swarm its defenses, Loot the houses, breaking down doors, smashing windows. They arrive like an earthquake, sweep through like a tornado. Sun and moon turn out their lights, stars black out. God himself bellows in thunder as he commands his forces. Look at the size of that army! And the strength of those who obey him!
God’s Judgment Day—great and terrible. Who can possibly survive this?” Joel 2:3-11 The Message
- “The Four Angels were untied and let loose, Four Angels all prepared for the exact year, month, day, and even hour when they were to kill a third of the human race. The number of the army of horsemen was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard the count and saw both horses and riders in my vision: fiery breastplates on the riders, lion heads on the horses breathing out fire and smoke and brimstone. With these three weapons—fire and smoke and brimstone—they killed a third of the human race. The horses killed with their mouths and tails; their serpentlike tails also had heads that wreaked havoc. Revelation 9:15-19 The Message
- “Blow the ram’s horn trumpet in Zion! Declare a day of repentance, a holy fast day. Call a public meeting. Get everyone there. Consecrate the congregation. Make sure the elders come, but bring in the children, too, even the nursing babies, Even men and women on their honeymoon—interrupt them and get them there. Between Sanctuary entrance and altar, let the priests, God’s servants, weep tears of repentance. Let them intercede: “Have mercy, God, on your people! Don’t abandon your heritage to contempt. Don’t let the pagans take over and rule them and sneer, ‘And so where is this God of theirs?’” Joel 2:15-17 The Message
Wine Anyone?
Beyond the immediate need to spiritually, if not physically, prepare for coming trouble and tribulation, Prophetic Christians should note Scripture's reoccurring theme regarding motivation and timing in the causation of revival and reformation. Take for example the New Testament’s record of Christ’s debut miracle. Here we find first the issue of timing, and then that of motivation, taking center stage:
- "Two days later Jesus’ mother was a guest at a wedding in the village of Cana in Galilee, and Jesus and his disciples were invited too. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, and Jesus’ mother came to him with the problem. “I can’t help you now,” he said. “It isn’t yet my time for miracles.” But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you to.” Six stone waterpots were standing there; they were used for Jewish ceremonial purposes and held perhaps twenty to thirty gallons each. Then Jesus told the servants to fill them to the brim with water. When this was done he said, “Dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies.” When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants did), he called the bridegroom over. “This is wonderful stuff!” he said. “You’re different from most. Usually a host uses the best wine first, and afterwards, when everyone is full and doesn’t care, then he brings out the less expensive brands. But you have kept the best for the last!” This miracle at Cana in Galilee was Jesus’ first public demonstration of his heaven-sent power. And his disciples believed that he really was the Messiah." John 2:1-11 Living Bible
- “I can’t help you now.” Jesus declines Mary’s implicit request to perform His first miracle.
- “It isn’t yet my time for miracles.” Christ explains it is not time for Him to publicly begin demonstrating the Kingdom of God.
- “But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you to.” Mary seems to skillfully press, rather than withdrawal, her request. Howbeit in perfect submission.
- “Then Jesus told the servants to fill them to the brim with water. When this was done he said, “Dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies.” Given that God the Father sets the time and seasons, Christ's acquiescence is stunning!
- “Usually a host uses the best wine first, and afterwards, when everyone is full and doesn’t care, then he brings out the less expensive brands. But you have kept the best for the last!” While it might be expected that the water turned to wine by the first miracle of Christ would be superior in every regard, the embedded implication could be surprising.
Like Mary, many have noted the wine; i.e. the power and presence of the Spirit, seems to have run out. Again, were the Book of Acts being written today, it might well be called the Book of Words. In the passage, the large pots filled with ceremonial water may be a representation of Christianity’s religious duties. Or perhaps even the word of God.
Christ's initial refusal to change the timing for His premiere miracle seems to parallel the principle in Joel. His “After that” signifying the default timing for the quantity and quality of a potential global revival referenced in Joel 2:28. Yet Mary’s importunity, like that of shown by the Canaanite mother, and again in the parable of the Persistent Widow changed God’s plans. Thus saving the day! And in Mary’s case, over the lack of wine at wedding. How much greater the responsibility of Prophetic Christians to arise and respond. Perhaps discovering that once again, Jesus saved “the best for last.”
Among concerned Christians, particularly those considering themselves intercessors, the term “remnant” is often bandied about. The implication being that within modern Christianity is a large contingency of misguided or lukewarm believers composing a kind of carnal corral. Those gathered, having displayed greater than average insight and commitment (not too difficult these days) thereby consider themselves among today’s faithful remnant. Certain Old Testament passages such as these are sometimes quoted:
- “Unless the Lord of hosts had left to us a very small remnant, We would have become like Sodom, We would have been made like Gomorrah.” Isaiah 1:9 New King James Version
- “In that day the remnant of Israel, the survivors of Jacob, will no longer rely on him who struck them down but will truly rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God. Though your people be like the sand by the sea, Israel, only a remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overwhelming and righteous. The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out the destruction decreed upon the whole land.” Isaiah 10:20-23 New International Version
- “Then I heard him call out in a loud voice, “Bring near those who are appointed to execute judgment on the city, each with a weapon in his hand.” And I saw six men coming from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a man clothed in linen who had a writing kit at his side. They came in and stood beside the bronze altar. Now the glory of the God of Israel went up from above the cherubim, where it had been, and moved to the threshold of the temple. Then the Lord called to the man clothed in linen who had the writing kit at his side and said to him, “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it.” As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion. Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple. Then he said to them, “Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city.” Ezekiel 9:1-8 New International Version - Emphasis QC’s
- “While they were killing and I was left alone, I fell facedown, crying out, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel in this outpouring of your wrath on Jerusalem?” He answered me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.’ So I will not look on them with pity or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.” Then the man in linen with the writing kit at his side brought back word, saying, “I have done as you commanded.” Ezekiel 9:8-11 New International Version - Emphasis QC’s
Fearful Prophecies
In another instance, the first of a pair of overlooked quantumly entangled and problematic passages also begins in Ezekiel:
- “God’s Message came to me: “Son of man, when a country sins against me by living faithlessly and I reach out and destroy its food supply by bringing on a famine, wiping out humans and animals alike, even if Noah, Daniel, and Job—the Big Three—were alive at the time, it wouldn’t do the population any good. Their righteousness would only save their own lives.” Decree of God, the Master.” Ezekiel 14:12-14 The Message
- “Or, if I make wild animals go through the country so that everyone has to leave and the country becomes wilderness and no one dares enter it anymore because of the wild animals, even if these three men were living there, as sure as I am the living God, neither their sons nor daughters would be rescued, but only those three, and the country would revert to wilderness.” Ezekiel 14:15-16 The Message
- “Or, if I bring war on that country and give the order, ‘Let the killing begin!’ leaving both people and animals dead, even if those three men were alive at the time, as sure as I am the living God, neither sons nor daughters would be rescued, but only these three.” Ezekiel 14:17-18 The Message
- “Or, if I visit a deadly disease on that country, pouring out my lethal anger, killing both people and animals, and Noah, Daniel, and Job happened to be alive at the time, as sure as I am the living God, not a son, not a daughter, would be rescued. Only these three would be delivered because of their righteousness.” Ezekiel 14:19-20 The Message
- “Now then, that’s the picture,” says God, the Master, “once I’ve sent my four catastrophic judgments on Jerusalem—war, famine, wild animals, disease—to kill off people and animals alike. But look! Believe it or not, there’ll be survivors. Some of their sons and daughters will be brought out. When they come out to you and their salvation is right in your face, you’ll see for yourself the life they’ve been saved from. You’ll know that this severe judgment I brought on Jerusalem was worth it, that it had to be.” Ezekiel 14:21-22 The Message - Emphasis QC’s
- “When he ripped off the fourth seal, I heard the fourth Animal cry, “Come out!” I looked. A colorless horse, sickly pale. Its rider was Death, and Hell was close on its heels. They were given power to destroy a fourth of the earth by war, famine, disease, and wild beasts.” Revelation 6:7-8 The Message - Emphasis QC’s
Today, more so than ever before, we stand in the eye of a spiritual storm set to strike with unprecedented gale force. As if today’s challenges of increasing levels of temptation and deception permeating modern society were not motivation enough, a prophesied hurricane of fire and judgment of such magnitude draws near that all of Christendom should be continually crying out to God. Instead, serious and strategic prayer and powerful intercession are all but gone with the wind. Christ and Scripture expect more:
- “Who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear" Hebrews 5:7 Hebrews 5:7 New King James Version
- “But be on your guard. Don’t let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap, for it’s going to come on everyone, everywhere, at once. So, whatever you do, don’t go to sleep at the switch. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that’s coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man.” Luke 21:34-36 The Message
- "But you, dear friends, carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, staying right at the center of God's love, keeping your arms open and outstretched, ready for the mercy of our Master, Jesus Christ. This is the unending life, the real life! Go easy on those who hesitate in the faith. Go after those who take the wrong way. Be tender with sinners, but not soft on sin. The sin itself stinks to high heaven." Jude 1:20-23 The Message
Godly Man vs. Man of God
An example of this most inconvenient of truths is found in the Biblical account of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Here God warns Abraham of imminent judgment:
- God continued, “The cries of the victims in Sodom and Gomorrah are deafening; the sin of those cities is immense. I'm going down to see for myself, see if what they're doing is as bad as it sounds. Then I'll know." The men set out for Sodom, but Abraham stood in God's path, blocking his way. Genesis 18:20-22 The Message
- “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly." 2 Peter 2:6 New King James Version
Third, this story takes place in the Bible's first Book, long before it was even written. Imagine for a moment the tens if not hundreds of thousands of grandparents and parents, teens and children, God reduced to ash. Not a one with so much as the Law of Moses, much less the historical and prophetic Books of the Old Testament. Neither did they have Christ's teaching in the Gospels or any of Books of the New Testament. Neither did they have the fullness of the Holy Spirit, 2,000 years of Church history or the spiritual blessings and unprecedented wealth and technology we so readily take for granted. In this day and age, we must be at least 1,000 times more culpable than those of Sodom and Gomorrah.
So what’s to be done? Biblical passages and human experience demonstrate that our beliefs only have value in as much as they lead to actions. As previously referenced:
- "Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!" James 2:17-18 New King James Version
- "So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God." James 1:19-20 New King James Version
The patriarch Abraham was the father of our faith. As warrior, prophet, and extraordinary intercessor, he clearly earned the distinction of "man of God." So much so, that prior to raining sulfuric fire down on the region, the Lord felt it necessary to inform only one man on the entire planet:
- Then God said, "Shall I keep back from Abraham what I'm about to do? Abraham is going to become a large and strong nation; all the nations of the world are going to find themselves blessed through him. Yes, I've settled on him as the one to train his children and future family to observe God's way of life, live kindly and generously and fairly, so that God can complete in Abraham what he promised him." Genesis 18:17-19 The Message
As for Lot, the Scriptures testify he was a godly man:
- "God decreed destruction for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. A mound of ashes was all that was left—grim warning to anyone bent on an ungodly life. But that good man Lot driven nearly out of his mind by the sexual filth and perversity, was rescued. Surrounded by moral rot day after day after day, that righteous man was in constant torment. So God knows how to rescue the godly from evil trials. And he knows how to hold the feet of the wicked to the fire until Judgment Day." 2 Peter 2:6-9 The Message
Additionally, untold millions of obedient belivers, the likes of which the world is unworthy, have and will be martyred. Even in the 1st century, Divine intervention was rare. With deliverance more the exception rather than rule, in this context “rescue” would seem to refer to spiritual insight and support in the face of persecution and martyrdom, as well as eternal salvation and reward. C.S. Lewis put it this way, “God, who foresaw your tribulation, has specially armed you to go through it, not without pain but without stain.”
In the Book of Acts Peter declares that “God is no respecter of persons.” This being true, there is yet reason to hope for the spiritual rescue for those who are willing to adopt lifestyles like Lot. Who in righteousness fully engaged his culture, to the point of being "driven nearly out of his mind by the sexual filth and perversity." Surrounded by moral rot and decay, day after day, that “righteous man was in constant torment.” Not as an apathetic of grumbling bystander, as hundreds of millions are today, but as an active spiritual combatant. Like Moses, Lot chose the rigors of a resistance fighter, rather than enjoy the false peace of a sympathizer or fleeting rewards of collaboration.
How few of us in the First World Church today live as righteously as Lot? As Jesus warned, “Remember Lot's wife.” Remember as well the grim fate Lot's daughters and whole family nearly suffered at the hands of Sodom's mob:
- "...the men of Sodom...called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.” So Lot ...said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.” And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. Genesis 19:4-9 New King James Version
- "Do you have any other family here? Sons, daughters—anybody in the city? Get them out of here, and now! We're going to destroy this place. ... Lot went out and warned the fiancés of his daughters, "Evacuate this place; God is about to destroy this city!" But his daughters' would-be husbands treated it as a joke. At break of day, the angels pushed Lot to get going, "Hurry. Get your wife and two daughters out of here before it's too late and you're caught in the punishment of the city." Lot was dragging his feet. The men grabbed Lot's arm, and the arms of his wife and daughters...and dragged them to safety outside the city. When they had them outside, Lot was told, "Now run for your life! Don't look back! Don't stop anywhere on the plain—run for the hills or you'll be swept away." Genesis 19:12-17 The Message
While being a godly man saved Lot's physical existence, in nearly every other respect his life was effectively destroyed. His wife was turned into a pillar of salt. His sons-in-law, friends and those he had ministered to in Sodom were burned alive. Perhaps second only to Noah's flood, Lot became humanities greatest reminder of judgment against sin. Lot’s daughters, fearing barrenness, would get him drunk and become pregnant by incest. Unlike Abraham, Lot's legacy would for all practical purposes disappear from the Scriptural record, only to resurface as the heathen nations of Moab and Ammon. Both continual thorns in the flesh of God's people Israel:
- Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the people of Ammon to this day. Genesis 19:36-38
Few today trouble themselves with the moral of such stories. Hundreds of millions of modern believers feel confident they are beyond such reproach. Unfortunately, this popular worldview again demonstrates a tragic and persistent Biblical disconnect. There are thousands of direct and indirect passages where God commands and encourages, confronts and warns, disciplines and even destroys His own people. Some still object, going so far as to insist God's Church is above deception. Yet this was hardly the case even with such powerfully anointed men as Samson and David. Today, far from achieving half the practical righteousness of the famous of Scripture, our lifestyles may be more in keeping with the moral decay and disillusionment of unbelievers. If so, rather than anticipating the praise of God, might we be storing up wrath against the day of God’s wrath?
Furthermore, is it spiritual preparedness or presumption to simply assume a favored status before God? Ought we not care enough to invest the time to genuinely study Scripture? To understand the Bible’s explanation of positional vs. conditional righteousness? To learn to differentiate between different levels of righteousness, in regards to the kind of corporate and personal sanctification the Jesus of Scripture requires?
7000 vs. 1
All the more true for those hoping to mature from spiritual thermometers to thermostats. Consider the prophet Elijah. Singlehandedly he rebuked Israel’s grievous sin, first by commanding the elements into 3 years of total drought and then by overthrowing 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah, by calling fire out of heaven on Mount Carmel.
Later, when granting his retirement request, God would disclose 7,000 had kept themselves pure of idolatry. Like Lot, this reserve displayed a measure of faith and discernment, sanctification and righteousness. At least enough to serve as thermometers, rightly accessing Israel’s spiritual temperature. Yet Elijah knew and or though little of them. His claim of being an army of one seemed reasonable under the circumstances:
- “I’ve been working my heart out for the God-of-the-Angel-Armies,” said Elijah. “The people of Israel have abandoned your covenant, destroyed the places of worship, and murdered your prophets. I’m the only one left, and now they’re trying to kill me.” 1 Kings 19:10 The Message
Training to become godly men and women, in hopes of of graduating into men and women of God, Prophetic Christians invest the passion and diligence of at at least amateur athletes. They embrace the challenge of recognizing the yeast of double-mindedness and dualism, knowing “if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.” Like Lot, they allow their souls to be tormented day and night by the lawless deeds around them. Such modern believers are increasingly rare, and thus priceless. Yet, even among Prophetic Christians, there seems to be a lot more Lot’s than Abrahams. Truly an unfortunate fact for all our sakes.
Most, consciously or not, consider such ancient Old Testament stories outdated and irrelevant. They reason God’s mellowed for Christ’s sake. Yet, the New Testament reminds we’re not to assume we’ve been given a spiritual pass, but rather commanded to study to show ourselves approved. Leaning from both past failures and successes:
- “Even if it was written in Scripture long ago, you can be sure it’s written for us. God wants the combination of his steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel in Scripture to come to characterize us, keeping us alert for whatever he will do next.” Romans 15:4 The Message
Doing so reveals that contrary to popular belief, tithing is not a requirement of New Testament Christians. In the King James Version the word tithe is used 32 times. There are 25 Old Testament and 7 New Testament occurrences. Of these, the word tithe is used 3 times in the gospels and 4 times in the Book of Hebrews. All these passages are contextually addressing the Jews in regards to Old Testament religious and temple observances. There is not a single directive regarding tithing to New Testament Christians, much less Gentile believers.
On the flip side, the same version uses the word “give” 358 times in the New Testament. Most of these observances reference a variety of types of giving. Thus the New Testament clearly emphasizes giving rather than tithing:
- “The whole congregation of believers was united as one—one heart, one mind! They didn’t even claim ownership of their own possessions. No one said, “That’s mine; you can’t have it.” They shared everything. The apostles gave powerful witness to the resurrection of the Master Jesus, and grace was on all of them. And so it turned out that not a person among them was needy. Those who owned fields or houses sold them and brought the price of the sale to the apostles and made an offering of it. The apostles then distributed it according to each person’s need. Joseph, called by the apostles “Barnabas” (which means “Son of Comfort”), a Levite born in Cyprus, sold a field that he owned, brought the money, and made an offering of it to the apostles.” Acts 4:32-37 The Message - Emphasis QC’s
- “Now [remember] this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows generously [that blessings may come to others] will also reap generously [and be blessed]. Let each one give [thoughtfully and with purpose] just as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver [and delights in the one whose heart is in his gift]. And God is able to make all grace [every favor and earthly blessing] come in abundance to you, so that you may always [under all circumstances, regardless of the need] have complete sufficiency in everything [being completely self-sufficient in Him], and have an abundance for every good work and act of charity.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 Amplified Bible - Emphasis QC’s
- “James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.” Galatians 2:9-10 New International Version - Emphasis QC’s
- “You Philippians well know, and you can be sure I’ll never forget it, that when I first left Macedonia province, venturing out with the Message, not one church helped out in the give-and-take of this work except you. You were the only one. Even while I was in Thessalonica, you helped out—and not only once, but twice. Not that I’m looking for handouts, but I do want you to experience the blessing that issues from generosity.” Philippians 4:15-17 The Message - Emphasis QC’s
- “Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?” James 2:14-17 The Message - Emphasis QC’s
- “This is how we’ve come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us. This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for ourselves. If you see some brother or sister in need and have the means to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God’s love? It disappears. And you made it disappear.” 1 John 3:16-17 The Message - Emphasis QC’s
In light of the underwhelming success of Churchianity, Prophetic Christians might well consider investing much, if not all of their giving, into ministries of their own. As Paul explained:
- “Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.” Galatians 6:4-5 The Message
When it comes to the 1st century Church, the New Testament authors are interesting reads when silhouetted against their mention in the Gospels and Book of Acts. While beautifully orchestrated, each seems to have a unique tonal quality. Of the major players, the apostle John is certainly the most quantum. Known as John the beloved, he’s arguable given the greatest revelation of the love of God. Among the twelve, and even the three comprising the inner circle, the “disciple whom Jesus loved” seemed most intimate with the Lord. Famous for penning John 3:16, and the Love Epistles, he was also singled out to care for Christ’s own mother by Jesus from the cross. Equally astonishing is that this same John receives the greatest revelation of the wrath of God to be found in Scripture. His Book of Revelation contains the most expansive view of sixty different events comprising the coming Great Tribulation.
In John’s example of wholehearted discipleship we find the lofty goal of the Prophetic Christian. Filled with the whole counsel of Scripture, John acknowledges and accepts the privilege and responsibility of fully embracing both the black and white keys. Trusting in the fairness and goodness of God, he along with all the New Testament greats, teach and model the embodiment of spiritual wisdom and maturity. Virtues desperately needed in the growing darkness of this late hour. As previously referenced:
- “But remember, dear friends, that the apostles of our Master, Jesus Christ, told us this would happen: “In the last days there will be people who don’t take these things seriously anymore. They’ll treat them like a joke, and make a religion of their own whims and lusts.” These are the ones who split churches, thinking only of themselves. There’s nothing to them, no sign of the Spirit! But you, dear friends, carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, staying right at the center of God’s love, keeping your arms open and outstretched, ready for the mercy of our Master, Jesus Christ. This is the unending life, the real life! Go easy on those who hesitate in the faith. Go after those who take the wrong way. Be tender with sinners, but not soft on sin. The sin itself stinks to high heaven. And now to him who can keep you on your feet, standing tall in his bright presence, fresh and celebrating—to our one God, our only Savior, through Jesus Christ, our Master, be glory, majesty, strength, and rule before all time, and now, and to the end of all time. Yes.” Jude 1:17-25 The Message
Together, let us tarry until we are transformed into the kind of Kingdom soldiers who can fulfill Christ's Great Commission. As those commanded, not to make converts, but disciples. Let us commit, individually and collectively, to waiting and wrestling with God until filled with all the fruit and gifts of the Spirit. Particularly that of healing the sick. Demonstrating the veracity of Biblical faith by routinely performing the kind of signs and wonders Jesus certified would accompany those who truly believe!
Prophetic Christians are willing to admit that for all the blessings and wonders of life, Earth remains a spiritually besieged planet. If not kill zone. Thus, our primary objective is to get to Heaven and take as many with us as we can. In light of the sin above, about and within, success in this all important pursuit is completely dependent on growing in sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.
Examples
Prophetic Christians appreciate the intractable problem of dualism and double-mindedness riddling humanity. Both outside and inside modern Christianity. As such, they’re ever mindful of Scriptural examples, such as the following:
1. Simon/Peter/Satan: As referenced, the dutiful and honored disciple Simon receives Christ’s greatest compliment, along with an awesome name upgrade! Yet, within a handful of verses, Jesus literally rebukes him as “Satan.”
In the first instance, upon recognizing Jesus as Messiah, Peter’s sensitivity to the Spirit of God was commended by Christ:
- “Simon Peter answered, “The Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God. God has blessed you, Simon, son of Jonah,” Jesus said, “for my Father in heaven has personally revealed this to you—this is not from any human source.” Matthew 16:17 Living Bible - Emphasis QC’s
- “Jesus turned on Peter and said, “Get away from me, you Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are thinking merely from a human point of view, and not from God’s.” Matthew 16:17 Living Bible - Emphasis QC’s
Thoroughly acquainted with double-mindedness, Jesus addressed this very dilemma among the people of God on a variety of occasions:
- “Jesus said, “What a generation! No sense of God! No focus to your lives! How many times do I have to go over these things? How much longer do I have to put up with this? Bring your son here.” While he was coming, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into convulsions. Jesus stepped in, ordered the vile spirit gone, healed the boy, and handed him back to his father. They all shook their heads in wonder, astonished at God’s greatness, God’s majestic greatness.” Luke 9:41-43 The Message - Emphasis QC’s
- “I’ve told you these things to prepare you for rough times ahead. They are going to throw you out of the meeting places. There will even come a time when anyone who kills you will think he’s doing God a favor. They will do these things because they never really understood the Father. I’ve told you these things so that when the time comes and they start in on you, you’ll be well-warned and ready for them." John 16:1-4 The Message - Emphasis QC’s
2. Saul/Paul: In the second of the previous passages, Jesus warns of the ultimate form of dualism. Persecutors martyring Christians, honestly thinking they were doing God a service. Saul, prior to his transformation into Paul, was a case in point. The miraculous metamorphosis from Saul the persecutor, to Paul the persecuted, demonstrates even the most dedicated can be as greatly deceived:
- “Circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.” Philippians 3:5-6 New International Version
Paul’s Biblical record begins with the martyrdom of Stephen, a Kingdom table waiter “filled with the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” A description of spiritual astuteness and power necessary to manage food distribution in the early church. A depiction that the great Charles Finney noted was sorely lacking from not only most of the clergy in his day, but even the leadership of the very institutions claiming authority to train and ordain them. Stephen, on the other hand, was so full of the Holy Spirit that when arrested and forced to confront God’s people and the religious leaders of their day, he reiterated such a history of insensitivity to God that his face shown like an angel’s. Nevertheless, his detractors, otherwise well meaning people of God, gnashed their teeth, covered their ears and proceeded to stone Stephen to death. With Saul, who would become Paul the Apostle, guarding their coats:
- “So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. They produced false witnesses, who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law. For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.” All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.” Acts 6:12-15 New International Version
- “When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.” Acts 7:54-60 The Message
- “All this time Saul was breathing down the necks of the Master’s disciples, out for the kill. He went to the Chief Priest and got arrest warrants to take to the meeting places in Damascus so that if he found anyone there belonging to the Way, whether men or women, he could arrest them and bring them to Jerusalem. He set off. When he got to the outskirts of Damascus, he was suddenly dazed by a blinding flash of light. As he fell to the ground, he heard a voice: “Saul, Saul, why are you out to get me?” He said, “Who are you, Master?” “I am Jesus, the One you’re hunting down. I want you to get up and enter the city. In the city you’ll be told what to do next.” His companions stood there dumbstruck—they could hear the sound, but couldn’t see anyone—while Saul, picking himself up off the ground, found himself stone-blind. They had to take him by the hand and lead him into Damascus. He continued blind for three days. He ate nothing, drank nothing. Acts 9:1-9 The Message
James/Jude: As previously mentioned, James the apparent half brother of Jesus, rose quickly through the ranks of apostles to head not only the first Church Council of Jerusalem, but possibly the entire church of his day. Yet, prior to an epiphany by the resurrected Christ, outside of thinking Jesus out of his mind, he and his bother Jude were nowhere to be found. This raises important considerations regarding spiritual sensitivity. Is reading the Bible and going to church good enough?
- Is Scripture enough? First of all, Biblical illiteracy is pandemic. In a variety a forms. Furthermore, Saul/Paul was clearly well studied. Finally, Christ is literally, “the word of God made flesh.” It’s all but inconceivable that the half brothers of Jesus could live day in and day out for what may well have been decades with the very Son of God, and yet require a personal epiphany before embracing Christ.
- Is Church enough? Peter and Paul, James and Jude, were not only members of the church of their day, but obviously Simon/Peter and Saul/Paul were recognized leaders, respectively. While genuine Christian fellowship and corporate prayer are essential aspects of living faith, even these, in and of themselves, weren’t enough. Either then or now. Something more is required.
- I could go on and on, but I’ve run out of time. There are so many more—Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the prophets… Through acts of faith, they toppled kingdoms, made justice work, took the promises for themselves. They were protected from lions, fires, and sword thrusts, turned disadvantage to advantage, won battles, routed alien armies. Women received their loved ones back from the dead. There were those who, under torture, refused to give in and go free, preferring something better: resurrection. Others braved abuse and whips, and, yes, chains and dungeons. We have stories of those who were stoned, sawed in two, murdered in cold blood; stories of vagrants wandering the earth in animal skins, homeless, friendless, powerless—the world didn’t deserve them!—making their way as best they could on the cruel edges of the world. Not one of these people, even though their lives of faith were exemplary, got their hands on what was promised. God had a better plan for us: that their faith and our faith would come together to make one completed whole, their lives of faith not complete apart from ours.” Hebrews 11:32-40 The Message
There are many relatively recent examples of such men and women. Several of which we've referenced throughout various articles. A few of which have GB articles of their own (see Resources/Great Messages and Sites hyperlinked list). Here, the following four may be helpful:
1. Charles Finney: According to accounts, Charles Grandison Finney was one of the most spiritually powerful men to walk the Earth since the apostles. Born in 1792, he became an American Presbyterian minister and leader in the Second Great Awakening in the United States. He would later be credited as the “Father of American revivalism,” and was said to have paved the way for such notables as Dwight L. Moody, Billy Sunday, and Billy Graham.
George Williams was converted by Finney’s writings and inspired to found the YMCA. William and Katherine Booth, founders of the Salvation Army, were also said to be heavily influenced by Finney:
- “Charles Grandison Finney wrote Lectures on Revival, which greatly influenced Catherine and William Booth. Their approach to revivalism copied Finney’s ‘American’ methods…. The Booths and hundreds of others committed to memory his manual for successful evangelism.”
- “The writer is inclined to regard Charles G. Finney as the greatest evangelist and theologian since the days of the apostles. It is estimated that during the year 1857-58 over a hundred thousand persons were led to Christ as the direct or indirect result of Finney's labours, while five hundred thousand persons professed conversion to Christ in the great revival which began in his meetings. Another remarkable fact is that it was found by actual research that over eighty-five in every hundred persons professing conversion to Christ in Finney's meetings remained true to God, whereas seventy per cent of those professing conversion in the meetings of even so great an evangelist as Moody afterwards became backsliders. Finney seems to have had the power of impressing the consciences of men with the necessity of holy living in such a manner as to procure the most lasting results. It is said that at Governeur, New York, not a dance or theatrical play could be held in the place for six years after Finney held meetings there.” - Emphasis QC's
- “He continued to preach the gospel, with increasing power and results, visiting many of the leading cities of America and Great Britain. Sometimes the power of God was so manifest in his meetings that almost the entire audience fell on their knees in prayer or were prostrated on the floor. When in the pulpit he sometimes felt almost lifted off his feet by the power of the Spirit of God. Some persons believe that the moral work of the Holy Spirit is not accompanied by any physical manifestations; but both in Bible times and in Finney's meetings remarkable physical manifestations seemed to accompany the moral work of the Holy Spirit when the moral work was deep and powerful. At times, when Finney was speaking, the power of the Spirit seemed to descend like a cloud of glory upon him. Often a hallowed calm, noticeable even to the unsaved, seemed to settle down upon cities where he was holding meetings. Sinners were often brought under conviction of sin almost as soon as they entered these cities.” - Emphasis QC's
- “There were many things wrong with the United States then, and Charles Finney, among others, became convinced that the gospel was meant by God to do more than just get people saved. It was also to clean up society, and one instrument for doing this in the 19th century was called the Benevolent Empire. This was a great network of volunteer societies organized to attack social problems… Since the late 1820s, Finney had been moving to include social reform in his program for awakening, and he felt very seriously that converts should immediately be put to urgent work in the battle against sin. “Every member must work or quit. No honorary members” in the Kingdom of God, he wrote. During the first three decades of the 1800s, Lewis Tappan and many other influential Christian laypeople organized thousands of societies that touched every phase of American life. Slavery, temperance, vice, world peace, women’s rights, Sabbath observance, prison reform, profanity, education—all these and more had specific societies devoted to their betterment… By 1834 the total annual income of the “Benevolent Empire” was about today’s equivalent of one hundred thirty million dollars, which rivaled the entire budget of the federal government in those days!”
Charles Finney preached and wrote extensively, often regarding various aspects of sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. While his works are notable, two are particularly so. In Blessed Are The Poor In Spirit, drawing from both his unique and uncanny Christian understanding and experience, he explains in detail the essential role deep and abiding repentance and brokenness play in a believers life:
- “Christ has no pleasure in causing this poverty of spirit only as it is the only way to get Himself before the mind. In no other way than by revealing to us by bitter experience our own weakness and sin, can He make us renounce ourselves and cast our all upon Him: and so He takes this way. And I tell you that no man can have a more important revelation from God, than this same revelation of self by the Spirit. And no man sees God in Christ, or apprehends Christ as He is for the soul, till he has seen himself--till he sees the old man and the necessity of putting on the new man.
- These seasons of spiritual poverty are indispensable to holding on to Christ. See a young convert--young converts know little of themselves or of Christ. They run well for a time, but they must be taught more of Christ, and this they can learn only by learning more of themselves. Well, Christ begins the work in a soul. The convert was all joy, but his countenance falls. Poor child! do not scold him. He is sad; he dares hardly indulge a hope. What is the matter? He desponds. You encourage him to trust in Christ and rejoice in Him. But no, that will not serve the turn, that does not remove the load. Christ has undertaken a work with him--has set about revealing him to himself, and the work will cost the poor soul many prayers, and tears, and groans, and searchings and loathings of heart. He prayed before for sanctification and he is astonished out of measure. He receives any thing in the world but sanctification. He prayed for the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, and he verily expected some beatific sight. He thought he should see the heavens opened as Stephen did. But instead of this, what a state! he seems given over to the tender mercies of sin. Every appetite and lust is clamorous as a fiend; his passions get the mastery; he frets, and grieves, and vexes himself, and repents and sins again; he is shocked, ashamed of himself, afraid to look up, is ashamed and confounded. Poor thing! he prayed to be sanctified, and he expected Christ would smile right through the darkness, and light up his soul with unutterable joy. But no! it is all confusion and darkness. He is stumbling, and sliding, and floundering, and plunging headlong into the mire, till his own clothes abhor him, and he is brought to cry--"Lord, O Lord, have mercy on me!" He expected--O what a fairy land! and he finds--what a desert--barren, dark, full of traps, and gins, and pitfalls; as it were the very earth conspiring with all things else, to ruin him. Child be not disheartened; Christ is answering your prayer. Cold professors may discourage you, but be not discouraged; you may weep and groan, but you are going through a necessary process. To know Christ, you must know yourself; to have Christ come in, you must be emptied of yourself. How will He so this for you? If you would but let go of self--if you would but believe all that God says of you, and renounce yourself at first and at once, you might be spared many a fall; but you will not, you will believe only upon experience, and hence that experience Christ makes sure that you shall have to the full. And now, mark: whoever expects to be sanctified without a full and clear and heart-sickening revelation of his own loathsomeness, without being first shown how much he needs it, is very much mistaken. Till you have learned that, nothing you can do can avail aught; you are not prepared to receive Christ as He is offered in the gospel.
In “Power From On High” Finney lists 27 conditions for walking in the power of the Spirit. QC highly recommends this and all of Finney’s work. That being said, most may find such radical discipleship overwhelming, and Finney’s fine tuned minutia too much too soon. Form more information see GB's Charles Finney and Revival Lectures.
2. George Müller: Considered by many as an icon of faith and miracles, George Müller was “a Christian evangelist and the director of the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, England. He cared for 10,024 orphans during his lifetime, and provided educational opportunities for the orphans to the point that he was even accused by some of raising the poor above their natural station in British life. He established 117 schools which offered Christian education to more than 120,000 children.”
Some of the highlights of Müller's well documented ministry include:
- "Preaching three times a week from 1830 to 1898, at least 10,000 times. And when he turned 70 he fulfilled a life-long dream of missionary work for the next 17 years until he was 87. He traveled to 42 countries, preaching on average of once a day, and addressing some three million people.”
- “He had read his Bible from end to end almost 200 times. He had prayed in millions of dollars (in today's currency) for the Orphans and never asked anyone directly for money. He never took a salary in the last 68 years of his ministry, but trusted God to put in people's hearts to send him what he needed. He never took out a loan or went into debt.”
- I seek at the beginning to get my heart into such a state that it has no will of its own in regard to a given matter. Nine-tenths of the trouble with people is just here. Nine-tenths of the difficulties are overcome when our hearts are ready to do the Lord's Will, whatever it may be. When one is truly in this state, it is usually but a little way to the knowledge of what His will is. - Emphasis QC's
- Having done this, I do not leave the result to feeling or simple impression. If so, I make myself liable to great delusions.
- I seek the Will of the Spirit of God through, or in connection with, the Word of God. The Spirit and the Word must be combined. If I look to the Spirit alone without the Word, I lay myself open to great delusions also. If the Holy Ghost guides us at all, He will do it according to the Scriptures and never contrary to them. - Emphasis QC's
- Next I take into account providential circumstances. These often plainly indicate God's Will in connection with His Word and Spirit. I ask God in prayer to reveal His Will to me aright.
- In reflection on the reliability of relinquishing his decisions to the leading of the Holy Spirit, George Müller explained, “Thus, through prayer to God, the study of the Word, and reflection, I come to a deliberate judgment according to the best of my ability and knowledge, and if my mind is thus at peace, and continues so after two or three more petitions, I proceed accordingly. In trivial matters, and in transactions involving most important issues, I have found this method always effective.”
3. Evan Roberts: Perhaps the simplest and most Scripturally astute advice for developing and maintaining sensitivity to the Spirit of God was developed by Evan Roberts, the leading figure of the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival.
- “The revival lasted less than a year, but in that time 100,000 people were converted. Begun as an effort to kindle non-denominational, non-sectarian spirituality, the Welsh revival of 1904-05 coincided with the rise of the labour movement, socialism, and a general disaffection with religion among the working class and youths. Placed in context, the short-lived revival appears as both a climax for Nonconformism and a flashpoint of change in Welsh religious life. The movement spread to Scotland and England, with estimates that a million people were converted in Britain. Missionaries subsequently carried the movement abroad; it was especially influential on the Pentecostal movement emerging in California."
- Confess any known sin to God and put any wrong done to others right.
- Put away any doubtful habit.
- Obey the Spirit promptly.
- Confess your faith in Christ publicly.
4. Smith Wigglesworth: A contemporary of Roberts, Smith Wigglesworth was baptized in the Holy Spirit during the Welsh and Azusa Street Revivals. He is credited with some of the most incredible miraculous healings ever recorded. Eye witness accounts report he possessed an unequaled sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. His was a long and world famous ministry which daily, if not hourly, manifested in an amazing display of genuine spiritual gifts. Astounding in both quantity and quality.
While exhibiting less than a 10th of the spiritual power, theological prowess and social outreach of Charles Finney, Smith Wigglesworth walked in 100 times the spiritual sensitivity, anointing and sanctification of today's best Christian leaders.
Furthering the greatness of his ministry was its profound simplicity and generosity in regards to the goodness of God and ardent love of Christ. All based on the single requirement. Faith without doubt. As he put it:
- God wants us so badly that he has made the condition as simple as he possibly could: Only believe.
- There is something about believing God that will cause Him to pass over a million people to get to you
For a complete account of Smith Wigglesworth's miraculous ministry, we highly recommend an excellent biography written by his long time friend and confidant Albert Hibbert entitled, The Secret of His Power. After which Prophetic Christians would do well to read and or listen to Wigglesworth's teaching and testimony in his own words through several books written by him. For example: Manifesting The Power Of God. See excepts below.
Smith Wigglesworth - The Man (A Man Of Prayer)
Wigglesworth was moved with compassion toward the sinner, the sick, the oppressed, the demon-possessed, because he spent so much time in the presence of his Lord that he was like Him.
Someone once asked Wigglesworth if he regularly spent long seasons in prayer. He answered, “I don’t very often spend more than a half hour in prayer at one time, but I never go more than a half hour without praying.” Prayer was his life. It was what he liked best of all. It was one of the secrets of his power.
Smith Wigglesworth - The Man (A Man Of Love)
Often in his meetings Wigglesworth would say, “I want the person with the worst case of sickness in this place to stand up.” After clearly demonstrating the power and love of God, through remarkable healings, the service would continue with genuine preaching and praise.
Smith Wigglesworth - The Spirit (A Spirit Of Humility)
Wigglesworth partook of the emblems with the utmost sincerity, fully alive to his responsibility. As a result, he lived in unbroken communion with his Lord. He was always ready for service, never taken by surprise. He often said, “If you have to stop to get ready when an opportunity arises, you are too late. The opportunity is gone and the chances are that it will not be presented again.” With this attitude, Wigglesworth was never at a loss for what to do in any situation.
Smith Wigglesworth - Life In The Spirit (Spiritual Combat)
To discern the seducing spirits which are appearing and multiplying in these last days, we desperately need the help of the Holy Spirit. Wigglesworth, in describing a place he had been, once remarked that the people there were under such satanic delusion that their marriages and homes were breaking up. I wonder what he would think today with so many marriages, even Christian ones, breaking down. Wigglesworth was concerned about this satanic invasion of the sanctity of marriage, which he foresaw. His apprehensions were well justified.
According to Wigglesworth, a Holy Ghost-oriented person would not fall victim to the demands of the flesh, regardless of what those demands were. He was persuaded that life in the Spirit could so dominate, that the physical body and its desires could come under the Spirit’s control.
He used to say, “It is a luxury to be filled with the Spirit. I see everything a failure except that which is done in the Spirit.”
Because Wigglesworth was filled with and radiated the Comforter, it was a common experience of both sinner and professing Christian alike to be under great conviction when in Wigglesworth’s presence. For the same reason, those of God’s people undergoing trials found wonderful consolation in Wigglesworth’s presence.
Smith Wigglesworth - Life In The Spirit (The Shield Of Faith)
Great fights produce great faith. Wigglesworth enjoyed the greatest season of supernatural ministry during the period of time in which he endured the greatest physical affliction. A doctor, whom he knew well, persuaded him to have an X-ray examination. Mainly to find out the extent of his illness, Wigglesworth obliged.
The X–ray revealed the presence of kidney stones in an advanced stage. The doctor said there was only one option open: to operate immediately. To this, Wigglesworth responded, “The God Who made this body is the One Who can heal it. No knife shall ever cut it.”
“But what about the stones?” the doctor asked.
“God will deal with them.”
Shaking his head, the doctor said, “If He ever does, I shall be interested to know about it.”
“You shall know.”
As the pain increased, Wigglesworth suffered indescribable agony. When ministering on the Isle of Man, he had lost so much blood that his face was pale. From there, he went to Sweden and held a meeting, full of tremendous blessings.
His son-in-law, James Salter, who was there with him, later told me, “Night after night, Wigglesworth was in and out of bed trying to pass the stones, often rolling on the floor in agony. Yet he never missed a service, and ministered to as many as a thousand sick folks in one day.” Even though Wigglesworth was in worse condition than many of those for whom he prayed, tremendous miracles were wrought. When he undressed at night, his underclothing was soaked with blood.
From Sweden, he went to Norway. Still the pain continued. Then he went to Switzerland and held a great revival. Multitudes were saved and healed. But Wigglesworth found no relief. Few people knew that he was going through the biggest test of his life. By faith he rose above it.
He went to America and swept through the country like a prairie fire. Thousands were saved and healed during this blessed campaign. By this time, he had been fighting the battle of his life for six long years.
James Salter said, “Sharing his room over those years, I marveled at the unquenched zeal with which he preached and the amazing compassion he manifested in his ministry to the sick. I have seen many people break down under lesser tests than his. He passed hundreds of stones. It was a miracle.”
Wigglesworth came through this grueling test with his fire-tried faith stronger than ever, and with a trust in God all hell could not shake. That period of glorious ministry left an unerasable impact upon this world so great that it is still being felt.

Many Called, Few Chosen
Jesus lamented, "For many are called, but few are chosen." Why? Because few chose to answer His call. To fully do so requires more than simple belief. We must foster lifestyles of unflinching resolve, embracing radical discipleship to the point of complete transformation into the entirely new creations of New Testament promise.
Would be Prophetic Christians do well to ponder the lives and accomplishments of Finney and Müller, Roberts and Wigglesworth. While currently lacking the power of such men, we can certainly follow in the footsteps of their wisdom. QC particularly recommends considering adopting a lifestyle marked by Evan Roberts 4 step process of developing sanctification and spiritual sensitivity.
Whoever and wherever we are, it behoves each of us to do our best. Preferably in groups of two or more. The correlation between connectivity and causation are quantum truths. In both the physical and spiritual world. In regards to the unity of diversity, the New Testament likens Christ’s Kingdom to a single body comprised of a myriad of parts functioning as a cohesive whole. Thus we all have vital roles to play. Ones in which we are far stronger together. As Scripture attests:
- “I’ll make the country a place of peace—you’ll be able to go to sleep at night without fear; I’ll get rid of the wild beasts; I’ll eliminate war. You’ll chase out your enemies and defeat them: Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand and do away with them. I’ll give you my full attention: I’ll make sure you prosper, make sure you grow in numbers, and keep my covenant with you in good working order.” Leviticus 26:8-10 The Message - Emphasis QC's
Rise up O men of God
Have done with lesser things
Give heart and soul and mind and strength
To serve the King of Kings
To serve the King of Kings
Rise up O men of God
His Kingdom tarries long
Bring in the day of brotherhood
And end the night of wrong
And end the night of wrong
Rise up O men of God
The Church for you doth wait
Send forth to serve the needs of men
In Christ our strength is great
In Christ our strength is great
Lift high the Cross of Christ
Tread where His feet have trod
As brothers of the Son of Man
Rise up O men of God
Rise up O men of God
Our response, or lack thereof, to the cause of Christ and humanity, holds equally great and grave potential. In both time and eternity. Through chains of causation, the rise or fall of friends and family, society and entire generations rests in our hands. As exemplified in the old proverb, For Want of a Nail:
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
While partial visible today, only eternity will reveal the full extent of all that has been forever lost for want of honest and vigorous prayer and Bible study, discipleship and evangelism. Wherever and whenever possible, we highly suggest Prophet Christians move beyond mere Christian fellowship and church attendance, into and through the crucible of deeply repentive and strategic corporate prayer.
For a more complete handling of the Bibles one and only remedy to the challenges arrayed against us, see GB's Prayer of Anguish. There you'll find Scripture's only step by step instructions on how Prophetic Christians can pass through James 4's gauntlet of holiness and radical discipleship into James 5's power of Elijah! Including the restoration of miraculously and dependably healing the sick.
A deep dive into the lives and ministries, writings and legacies of Charles Finney and Smith Wigglesworth reveal a quantum path in seeking and serving God. Particularly in regards to the rigors of radical discipleship and the restoration of power evangelism. Essential components when advocating for personal and corporate revival in the modern world.
Both men were 200% committed to Christ. Each, in their own respective ways, lived and ministered with perhaps the greatest authentic and documented anointing seen in centuries. Neither allowed a hint worldliness or unbelief, doubtful habits or subtle sin, to diminish their Scriptural power and authority. Nor did either, for even a moment, dare grieve the Holy Spirit from Whom their spiritual strength flowed. Even so, while yielding unprecedented results, their effectiveness and expertise focused on nearly opposite facets of Christian faith.
Finney's life and work majored on repentance and service. Godly fear and love for Christ, without compromise, required vigorous and demanding holiness and sanctification. No dualistic or double-minded lifestyles. The reward for which was the glorification of God and expansion of His Kingdom. Finney's cry was for radical Christian experience resulting from extreme sanctification to God. For the sake of God's own infinite goodness. A goodness that closed not only bars and brothels, but dance halls and theaters, far and wide. Often for years after he had come and gone. All this while simultaneously expanding social services and outreach for those in need at levels previously unseen.
Wigglesworth life and work majored on belief and miracles. Absolute faith in the love of Christ, without doubt, also required vigorous and demanding holiness and sanctification. Again, no dualistic or double-minded lifestyles. The reward for which was experiencing and sharing the absolute power and glory of the unequalled goodness of Christ and His Kingdom. Wigglesworth's cry was never to leave a Christian meeting without a life altering encounter, if not collision, with the Spirit's fruit and gifts. Gifts of phenomenal healings and deliverances that enabled and empowered the fullest expression of Christ's inconceivable love and grace. The experience of which created individual and corporate cravings to fully please, and never grieve, the Holy Spirit of promise.
Prophetic Christians do well to meditate on Finney and Wigglesworth in hopes of emulating their unique and unsurpassed anointing. Doing so, mindful of Christ's warning to His first disciples, "As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work." Perhaps God may yet raise up true heirs to their legacy in this late and troubled hour.
What is needed is quantum balance and equilibrium. In this case, as a decades old prayer partner once noted in regards to resolving the tension between accurately discerning Scripture and the centrality of the Holy Spirit, “Evangelism without prayer is Fruitless, Prayer without Evangelism is Faithless. Scripture without the Spirit is Lifeless, the Spirit without Scripture is Baseless.” With this mind, let us more prayerfully study the Bible, recognizing Scripture itself must be "spiritually discerned."
Times and Seasons
Today's Churchianity is ill prepared to discern, much less confront and overcome, past and present challenges. With hundreds of sects and denominations, clearly we've failed to invested the honest effort to Biblically judge between the many Christs the One true. Tragically, this calls into question to what extent we actually believe, teach and/or obey the genuine gospel.
What of more subtle issues? Up to and including accurately discerning the times and seasons and sociopolitical era thrust upon us? Intentionally or unintentionally, modern Christianity has a history of all but upending the obvious meaning of Scripture's most important meta messages. Both in regards to the Bible's context as well as content. This includes a cacophony of false direction continually voiced from clergy to laity, via tens of thousand of misinformed modern prophecies arising from social media and Youtube, websites and podcasts.
Having repeatedly failed the test on so many levels, what's to be our future? With obvious errors in regards to such major concerns, it's little wonder complex matters requiring greater discernment and perception are continually misconstrued. As Jesus warned God's people in His day:
- "Then he said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once that it is going to rain, and so it does. And when you feel the south wind blowing, you say that it is going to be hot, and so it is. You frauds! You know how to interpret the look of the earth and the sky. Why can’t you interpret the meaning of the times in which you live?” Luke 12:54-46 Phillips
Such signs of the times bode poorly for modern Christianity, and society as a whole. As do every other indicator imaginable. The threat of present and future global pandemics abound. Economic tribulation reverberates worldwide. Forty three million sought unemployment benefits in the U.S. alone. Coast to coast rioting and looting, violence and murder, over the justifiable death of career criminal George Floyd went unchecked for months. Not to mention a series of other false martyrs used by Antifa, Black Lives Mater and Democrats to promote and propagate the greatest unchecked anarchy in recent U.S. history. All this while calling to defund the police after already making the crucial job of societies protectors all but impossible.
Scripture is clear such manipulations of facts and logic are forbidden and will prove disastrous for all parties involved:
- "Doom to you who call evil good and good evil, Who put darkness in place of light and light in place of darkness, Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!" Isaiah 5:20 MSG
Michelle and former President Barack Obama's 2020 DNC speeches supporting BLM's "peaceful protesters" provide blatant examples of calling evil good and good evil. Here's a partial transcript of each:
Former First Lady Michele Obama:
- "Empathy: that's something I've been thinking a lot about lately. The ability to walk in someone else's shoes; the recognition that someone else's experience has value, too. Most of us practice this without a second thought. If we see someone suffering or struggling, we don't stand in judgment. We reach out because, "There, but for the grace of God, go I." It is not a hard concept to grasp. It's what we teach our children. And like so many of you, Barack and I have tried our best to instill in our girls a strong moral foundation to carry forward the values that our parents and grandparents poured into us. But right now, kids in this country are seeing what happens when we stop requiring empathy of one another. They're looking around wondering if we've been lying to them this whole time about who we are and what we truly value. They see people shouting in grocery stores, unwilling to wear a mask to keep us all safe. They see people calling the police on folks minding their own business just because of the color of their skin. They see an entitlement that says only certain people belong here, that greed is good, and winning is everything because as long as you come out on top, it doesn't matter what happens to everyone else. And they see what happens when that lack of empathy is ginned up into outright disdain. They see our leaders labeling fellow citizens enemies of the state while emboldening torch-bearing white supremacists. They watch in horror as children are torn from their families and thrown into cages, and pepper spray and rubber bullets are used on peaceful protestors for a photo-op."
- Since when is "empathy" defined as supporting months of BLM's unchecked violent and deadly rampage across the entire country. How is looting and torching the life's work of innocent business owners "the ability to walk in someone else's shoes; the recognition that someone else's experience has value, too."
- It's certainly true that inflating erroneous police crime statistics, while ignoring years of Black on Black violence and murders within inner cities, occasions "looking around wondering if we've been lying to them this whole time about who we are and what we truly value." Particularly in the Obama's own city of Chicago where within weeks of their speeches there were 18 murders in 24 hours.
- No one is supporting and BLM is not targeting "torch-bearing white supremacists." Rather just about everyone else.
- "Peaceful protestors" hardly describe the hundreds, if not thousands, of violent criminals that have largely been free to rampage at will.
Former President Barack Obama:
- "Joe and Kamala will restore our standing in the world – and as we've learned from this pandemic, that matters. Joe knows the world, and the world knows him. He knows that our true strength comes from setting an example the world wants to follow. A nation that stands with democracy, not dictators. A nation that can inspire and mobilize others to overcome threats like climate change, terrorism, poverty, and disease. But more than anything, what I know about Joe, what I know about Kamala is that they actually care about every American. And that they care deeply about this democracy. They believe that in a democracy, the right to vote is sacred, and we should be making it easier for people to cast their ballots, not harder. They believe that no one – including the president – is above the law, and that no public official – including the president – should use their office to enrich themselves or their supporters. They understand that in this democracy, the Commander-in-Chief does not use the men and women of our military, who are willing to risk everything to protect our nation, as political props to deploy against peaceful protesters on our own soil. They understand that political opponents aren't "un-American" just because they disagree with you; the free press isn't the "enemy" but the way we hold officials accountable; that our ability to work together to solve big problems like a pandemic depend on a fidelity to facts and science and logic and not just making stuff up…. Because that's what at stake right now. Our democracy."
- "Joe and Kamala know… our true strength comes from setting an example the world wants to follow." Rioting and looting, violence and murder, burning police buildings and defacing public property based on a narrative of lies is hardly an example the world wants or needs.
- No one has even suggested impinging the rights of "peaceful protesters." A description clearly opposite the agenda of destruction and mayhem demonstrated by Antifa, BLM and many Democrats leaders.
- The "way we hold we hold officials accountable" is for the liberal media to provide endless forums promoting politicians and community leaders calling evil good and good evil. All the while denouncing voices of sanity and reason.
- Supporting and promoting months of nationwide anarchy, based on inverting truth and statistics opposes "fidelity to facts and science and logic" and is the very definition of "just making stuff up."
Even a majority of Republicans have done little to nothing to stoutly stand against such obvious evil. Up to and including President Trumps refusal to date to enact the Insurrection Act to put down domestic terrorism.
Never before has the spiritual and societal battle line been drawn so clearly. Even the genocide of abortion is largely unseen. More a religious and moral issue than continual in your face BLM rioting and looting, violence and murder. A campaign of terror supplemented with the tearing down of monuments, while bestowing martyrdom and sainthood on felons. Again, with the approval of a majority of the most powerful individuals, corporations and organizations in the U.S. if not world.
All this as the specters of apocalyptic events appear looming on the horizon. Some, like Matt Walsh, a cultural and political commentator, pinpoint glaring lapses in judgment and common sense. Others forward more nefarious social and spiritual scenarios. As for a COVID-19 vaccine, there are a great many reasons for caution, up to and including genuine concerns in regards to efficacy and safety, not to mention medical professionals questioning plans to roll out genetic manipulation and even nano technology (if video link fails to play click here to download an important 20 min video).
Others speculate the introduction of a final New World Order. Possibly even the ushering in of the long foretold Antichrist, as well as the Mark of the Beast. The appearance of both, as Scripture plainly warns, predating Christ's prophesied Rapture of the Church. It's not hard to imagine a scenario where the primary, secondary and tertiary effects of global catastrophes such as COVID-19 play a significant role in the beginning of sorrows warned of in the gospels, epistles and Book of Revelation.
While bad news to be sure, there is hope in the knowing. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. At least for those with the eye's, ears and hearts willing to see, hear and understand. While discussing end time events, during His Olivet Discourse Jesus explains, "See, I have warned you about this ahead of time."
In regards to the last days, Christ's warnings are clear:
- "This is going to be trouble on a scale beyond what the world has ever seen, or will see again. If these days of trouble were left to run their course, nobody would make it. But on account of God’s chosen people, the trouble will be cut short." Matthew 24:21-22 The Message
- "But be on your guard. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that’s coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man." Luke 21:34-36 MSG
- "'I’m going to make a clean sweep of the earth, a thorough housecleaning.'" God’s Decree. 'Men and women and animals, including birds and fish—Anything and everything that causes sin—will go, but especially people.'" Zephaniah 1:2-3 MSG
- "So get yourselves together. Shape up! You’re a nation without a clue about what it wants. Do it before you’re blown away like leaves in a windstorm, Before God’s Judgment-anger sweeps down on you, Before God’s Judgment Day wrath descends with full force. Seek God, all you quietly disciplined people who live by God’s justice. Seek God’s right ways. Seek a quiet and disciplined life. Perhaps you’ll be hidden on the Day of God’s anger." Zephaniah 2:1-3 MSG
- "By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith." Hebrews 11:7 NIV
The Bible repeatedly references the sad fact that God's own people often lack discernment and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Without spiritual eyes and ears, hearts and minds to accurately comprehend and appropriately respond, we are easily deceived in both doctrine and lifestyle. Hundreds of Christian sects and denominations, each promoting various Christs and versions of the gospel, testify to our Enemy's cunning. If Satan could influence perhaps a third of Heaven's ancient, holy and glorious angles to rebel, mankind presents little challenge.
And if Churchianity's all over the board in regard to the Bible's major themes, what of more subtle issues? Up to and including accurately discerning the times and seasons in which we live? Intentionally or unintentionally, modern Christianity has a history of all but upending the obvious meaning of Scripture's most important meta messages.
When it comes to being off page, Christ leveled a terrible indictment against the rebellion and hypocrisy of the people of God in His day:
- "You’re hopeless! You build tombs for the prophets your ancestors killed. The tombs you build are monuments to your murdering ancestors more than to the murdered prophets. That accounts for God’s Wisdom saying, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, but they’ll kill them and run them off.’ What it means is that every drop of righteous blood ever spilled from the time earth began until now, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was struck down between altar and sanctuary, is on your heads. Yes, it’s on the bill of this generation and this generation will pay." Luke 11:47-51
- " Next Jesus let fly on the cities where he had worked the hardest but whose people had responded the least, shrugging their shoulders and going their own way. “Doom to you, Chorazin! Doom, Bethsaida! If Tyre and Sidon had seen half of the powerful miracles you have seen, they would have been on their knees in a minute. At Judgment Day they’ll get off easy compared to you. And Capernaum! With all your peacock strutting, you are going to end up in the abyss. If the people of Sodom had had your chances, the city would still be around. At Judgment Day they’ll get off easy compared to you.” Matthew 11:20-24 MSG
- "These are all warning markers—danger!—in our history books, written down so that we don’t repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel—they at the beginning, we at the end—and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were. Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else…" 1 Corinthians 10:11-12 MSG
- "Write to Laodicea, to the Angel of the church. God’s Yes, the Faithful and Accurate Witness, the First of God’s creation, says: "I know you inside and out, and find little to my liking. You’re not cold, you’re not hot—far better to be either cold or hot! You’re stale. You’re stagnant. You make me want to vomit. You brag, ‘I’m rich, I’ve got it made, I need nothing from anyone,’ oblivious that in fact you’re a pitiful, blind beggar, threadbare and homeless. Here’s what I want you to do: Buy your gold from me, gold that’s been through the refiner’s fire. Then you’ll be rich. Buy your clothes from me, clothes designed in Heaven. You’ve gone around half-naked long enough. And buy medicine for your eyes from me so you can see, really see." Revelation 3:14-18 MSG
Laodiceans of all times and seasons clearly fail to understand spiritual warfare. Only a civilian would dare brag, "I'm rich, I’ve got it made, I need nothing from anyone…" during the battles and shortages of cosmic spiritual war. Particularly when in actuality they were a, "pitiful, blind beggar, threadbare and homeless…" A war, by the way, about to increase exponentially. Overrunning the entire earth. Ruining the whole planet.
The Alive After The Fall video is a short but well produced overview of last day prophecies in light of recent events. It also offers a reasonable though fearful handling of America's currently apparent place in Biblical prophecy, along with resources to help equip individuals and families to survive what may well be coming. GB highly recommends watching the video, but if necessary you can click here to view the transcript.
When it comes to a nearly wholesale misunderstanding and/or under appreciating of Scripture, from its basic tenants to eschatology, only the context of conflict theology can make sense pf both modern Christianity's state of woeful deception and flagrant disregard for the Bible's clear and concise commands. Including Scripture's emphasis on sanctification and the virtue of fear, the harsh sayings of Jesus and Revelation's account of Christ's judging His Church.
David Wilkerson and Leonard Ravenhill, recently lost brilliant lights within the modern Church, should both be studied and emulated. GB's Prayer of Anguish is a tribute to Wilkerson. The following are some of Ravenhill's best quotes, with links to a short and extended interview prior to his passing:

Prayer Meetings/Revival
- No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying. We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few pray-ers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters. Failing here, we fail everywhere.
- Great eagles fly alone; great lions hunt alone; great souls walk alone-alone with God. Such loneliness is hard to endure and impossible to enjoy unless God accompanied. Prophets are lone men; they walk alone, pray alone and God makes them alone.

- There’s only one proof of the Holy Ghost in your life and that’s a holy life.
- I’d rather have 10 people that want God than 10,000 people who want to play church.
- Quit playing, start praying. Quit feasting, start fasting. Talk less with men, talk more with God. Listen less to men, listen to the words of God. Skip travel, start travail.
- The secret of praying is praying in secret. A sinning man will stop praying, and a praying man will stop sinning.
- Prayer is preoccupation with our needs. Praise is preoccupation with our blessings. Worship is preoccupation with GOD Himself.
- You can have all of your doctrines right—yet still not have the presence of God.
- How do you learn to pray? Well, how do you learn to swim? Do you sit in a chair with your feet up drinking coke learning to swim? You get down and you struggle. That’s how you learn to pray.
- All you have to do is get in a closer walk with God and you’ll find your enemies are in your own church.
- The church that is man-managed instead of God-governed is doomed to failure. A ministry that is college-trained but not Spirit-filled works no miracles.
- My goal is GOD HIMSELF. Not joy, not peace, not even blessing but HIMSELF…my GOD.
- You know, we live in a day when we are more afraid of holiness than we are of sinfulness.
- The self-sufficient does not pray, the self-satisfied will not pray, the self-righteous cannot pray. No man is greater than his prayer life.
- Smart men walked on the moon, daring men walked on the ocean floor, but wise men walk with God.
- You won’t become a saint by studying your Bible; you’ll become a saint by living it.

Update 2022
For my part I've spent 40 years strategically seeking and serving God with a single focus:
1. Is Modern Christianity and/or Churchianity working?
2. If not, why?
As a Charismatic minister, with better than average understanding of Biblical truth, the journey led me to the following inconvenient truths
1. 1/3 of my doctrine was accurate.
2. 1/3 of my doctrine was in error.
3. 1/3 of the Bible's most crucial points were either undervalued or missing altogether.
Furthermore, I've found this sad equation is far more often the rule rather than the exception.
With this in mind I've spent over two decades developing a topical Biblical commentary entitled, Quantum Christianity, showcased on my site GodBlog.net.
This was all long before 2020...
If there was ever an acceptable time to confuse Christianity with a Cruise vs. Battleship, those days are past. As Paul warned: “And if the [war] bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?” 1 Corinthians 14:8 AMP
The spiritual and sociopolitical foundations of America and Western Society have steadily been undermined since the 1960’s Sexual Revolution began reversing millennia of Christian morality. Followed by the decimating of traditional marriage and family through cohabitation and divorce. Culminating in the clinical and contraceptive abortion of 1 to 2 billion of Christ’s least brothers, 5-10 times the entire world’s population in Biblical days. A diabolic campaign of global temptation and deception destructively descending into militant homosexual and inconceivable transgenderism. A lost war against humanity, all but unfought by modern Christianity.
It’s one thing to fight and fail. It’s another to fail to fight. Not even in serious prayer meetings...
Furthermore, it should be abundantly clear the Times and Seasons have drastically declined since 2020. Nationally and globally, the world has never scene the like of even the following short list:
1. Covid-19 and variants, of questionable origin, mandates promoting and/or requiring untested and dangerous MRNA “vaccines” and “boosters” with negative efficacy and even deadly side effects revealing unprecedented control of healthcare and politics by the collusion of pharmaceutical companies and bureaucrats. To the point of threatening the removal of medical licenses of physicians prescribing safe and reliable treatments proven effective against respiratory and other illness. Example: In 2015 Ivermectin won the only Nobel Prize award for treatments of infectious diseases since six decades prior. Also report by Fortune Magazine (not right wing magazine) reveals that a simple home remedy of saline solution used for "Twice Daily Nose Flushing Can Reduce Covid Hospitalization and Death Researchers Find" by 85%. This study was conducted Fall 2020, and could have helped prevent 3/4 of Covid deaths.

Since March 2020, when IVM was first used against a new global scourge, COVID-19, more than 20 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have tracked such inpatient and outpatient treatments. Six of seven meta-analyses of IVM treatment RCTs reporting in 2021 found notable reductions in COVID-19 fatalities, with a mean 31% relative risk of mortality vs. controls. During mass IVM treatments in Peru, excess deaths fell by a mean of 74% over 30 days in its ten states with the most extensive treatments.

Our hospitals have become killing fields. From remdesivir and illegal DNR orders to denial of treatment, forced starvation, and abuse based on vaccination status, Gail experienced the horrors that hundreds of thousands of other Americans suffered in the hospitals. Except, thanks to her husband and help from state Senator Bob Hall, she wound up being forcibly extricated from the hospital after 14 days of torture (7 days no water…). Even though the doctors said she wouldn’t last a day longer, she is now perfectly healthy and is trying to raise awareness about the hospital genocide.

It’s a complete lockout…” “If you don’t get it you have your career destroyed. If you do get it you have your body destroyed. And then everything they plan on doing there on down with it. Extreme rise in prenatal death and birth defects among newborn. Cover up and collusion by. governments, health care and media industries. 4. BLM and Antifa’s spreading of widespread rioting and looting, violence and lawlessness in the name of blatantly FALSE narratives such as Critical Race Theory (CRT) and systemic police brutality. Both undermining the foundations of society by “calling good evil and evil good.” All the while elevating career felons like George Floyd to sainthood status while ignoring the plague of black on black violence and murder, particularly within liberally controlled inner cities like the Obama’s Chicago.

9. Drug cartel control of southern border unleashing illegal alien invasion of 2 million immigrants in 2022. Horrifying abuse, violence and death of women and children, sick and elderly by the most outrageous smugglers and traffickers in American history enabled by Biden administration, democratic policy and republican controlled opposition. On national and state level. Immigrants extorted $10-50,000 by cartels to allow illegal crossing into US.

10. Drug cartel designer drug epidemic and death rate. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid approximately 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl. The U.S. government does not track death rates for every drug. However, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collects information on deaths involving many of the more commonly used drugs. Nearly 92,000 persons in the U.S. died from drug-involved overdose in 2020, including illicit drugs and prescription opioids. Up from less than 20,000 in 1999. Thats a 350% increase in 2020 with higher rates in 2022..
