Offering fame and fortune, with annual revenues and residuals in the tens of billions, the music industry attracts some of humanity's most talented producers and performers. Yet beneath the glitz and glamor, artists often strike a chord that reveals and reverberates the pains and pleasures life.
While most songs target mankind's baser instincts, here and there the lyrics, melody and/or images of music video seem to serve a higher purpose. Sometimes obvious and at other times hidden between the lines, questions or comments about life's ultimate concerns slip through, urging us to contemplate the nature of our existence.
Brand New's "Jesus Christ," U2's Still Haven't Found and Billy Joel's "River of Dreams" raise the question of life's meaning in the face of loneliness and death. Nickelback's smash hit, "If Everyone Cared" says and The Fray's How To Save A Life call for social action.
Sarah McLachlan's "Fallen" and "Stupid" reveal the hidden pain behind temptation and immorality. In "Broken Wings" Alter Bridge warns there's a high price to be paid for how we live. Alice In Chains hauntingly reminds that in this life in the end it's "Your Decision."
