Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.
- E.Y. Harburg
Anything but a Christian, the gothic group Evanescence is in a league all their own when it comes to revealing the heartache and peril of a lost generation. A message clearly communicated from their very name, literally meaning fading or failing (as in light) to that of their first 15 million copy selling album "Fallen."
The Chorus of "Bring Me To Life" begs and pleads, (Wake me up) Wake me up inside (I can’t wake up) Wake me up inside (Save me) call my name and save me from the dark (Wake me up) bid my blood to run (I can’t wake up) before I come undone (Save me) save me from the nothing I’ve become...
"Going Under" may well be about romance gone bad, yet the rock ballad the music video seems even a more appropriate lament from the souls of the enslaves to Satan, "the god of this world" who scripture declares has "blinded the eyes of men" "taking them captive to do his will." Far better than the vase majority of sermons, Evanescence's music video reveals the faces of it's own make up artists, members of the media, fans and even members transforming demonically while Amy Lee cries and screams:
Now I will tell you what I've done for you - 50 thousand tears I've cried.
Screaming, deceiving and bleeding for you - And you still won't hear me.
(going under)
Don't want your hand this time - I'll save myself. Maybe I'll wake up for once
(wake up for once)
Not tormented daily defeated by you. Just when I thought I'd reached the bottom
I'm dying again
I'm going under (going under). Drowning in you (drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (falling forever). I've got to break through
I'm going under
Blurring and stirring - the truth and the lies.(So I don't know what's real)
So I don't know what's real and what's not
(and what's not)
Always confusing the thoughts in my head. So I can't trust myself anymore
I'm dying again
I'm going under (going under). Drowning in you (drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (falling forever). I've got to break through
I'm going under
"Everybody's Fool" addresses the lies, betrayal and deception of life. "Tourniquet" might well be a hymn of redemption for not only a lost culture but tragically, for Churchianity if it were honest enough to admit the desperateness of our situation:
I tried to kill the pain, but only brought more, so much more.
I lay dying, and I'm pouring crimson regret and betrayal.
I'm dying, praying, bleeding and screaming
am I too lost to be saved, am I too lost?
My God my tourniquet, return to me salvation.
My God my tourniquet, return to me salvation.
Do you remember me, lost for so long?
Will you be on the other side, or will you forget me?
I'm dying, praying, bleeding and screaming
am I too lost to be saved, am I too lost?
My God my tourniquet, return to me salvation.
My God my tourniquet, return to me salvation.
I want to die!!!
My God my tourniquet, return to me salvation.
My God my tourniquet, return to me salvation.
My wounds cry for the grave. My soul cries for deliverance
Will I be denied? Christ. Tourniquet. My suicide...
